"Quad" means that 4 channel CODEC are integrated into one single chip."PCM" stands for "Pulse Coding Modulation", it is the name for this kind of modulations. There are some other kind of modulations, such as "PAM", Pulse Amplitude Modulation."CODEC" is a combination of coding and decoding.

This picture shows the basic functions of PCM CODEC. One function is to transform an analogue signal to a binary bit stream according to certain "Law". In the United States and North American, "u-Law" is adopted. But in Europe and China, "A-Law" is adopted. This procedure is called "Coding". Another function is to recover an analogue signal from a binary bit stream according to certain Law, also two options: A-Law and u-Law. This procedure is called "Decoding". If we combine the two words "Coding" and "Decoding" together, then we get the word "CODEC ".
NW1034 integrated 4 channels CODEC into a single chip, so we call it Quad PCM CODEC. It also has a serial control interface for micro-controller to set different configurations on this chip.
NW1034 multiplex the four channel 64Kbits/s signals into one high speed bit stream. And vise versa, de-multiplexed the one high speed bit stream into 4 64 Kbits/s signals. The bit rate of the high speed bit stream can be programmed at 512Kbits/s, 2.048Mbits/s, 4.096Mbits/s or 8.192MBits/s. |
